Step into a maternity session that captures the beauty and essence of growing life inside you. For this stylish photography maternity session, we focused on creating four looks. Sensual and neutral approach to gathering a variety of maternity poses and moods. I named them The Boho Chic, The Manhattan Mood, The Ethereal Goddess and The Cochella Babe. A variety of gorgeous looks inspired by many women in fashion and film. Let’s break them down.
Thinking of a light and airy boho look, I think it’s easy to jump into a flowing skirt, ruffled matching top and pair it with a gorgeous tailored hat from Gigi Pip. With the makeup and hair, we keep it neutral in color and minimal in structure. Clean glowing skin using a combo of MAC Cosmetics Face + Body with MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Concealer to add the right amount of coverage. Lips were stunning in Nars Afterglow Lip Gloss.
Fashion week in New York brings out so much variety in fashion and the coming looks we may see hit our local stores. When I think of a Manhattan Mood, I immediately think blazers, stoic faces of the supermodels of the 90’s and minimal makeup. For this look, we kept a similar feel to The Boho Chic and added a white tailored jacket, removed the top to give a more sultry result and left the hair down. We shot options in digital and film stock in Kodak Portra 160 which you can see gave a bit more green and contrast to the tones. Can you see the difference?
Motherhood and maternity immediately case a spell of goddess enchantment over me. The fact we grow living life inside our bodies, develop full brains and an entire skeletal system is a simple miracle marvel! This always give me ethereal vibes and the power of a goddess. To evoke this look I knew a gorgeous silk chiffon white piece of fabric would do all the work. Now you instantly have a stunning goddess-like effect. We took this look down to the ground to secure the power of this vision. Added the fan to introduce some movement to the hair. Then slowed the shutter speed down to fully capture it.
Let’s take a look.
For this last look, while running out of time, we slicked the hair back. Added a dark backdrop and for wardrobe we kept it cool in a netted two piece. I especially love the 35mm film versions of this series which was shot on Kodak Portra 160. A very slow speed film that added such a mood to the final photos.
These next few images were shot on my Sony a7iii using 24-70 GM II lens.
The differences from digital to film can be pretty different. I typically will edit my digital images to mirror the film, but sometimes don’t have to luxury to wait for my film scans to be processed and sent back to me. In this case, I edited to my personal design the digitals and kept the film closer to their original process.
This studio maternity fashion focused session took place in around two hours with four various looks. It included makeup and hair with an entire online gallery of edited images.
